The most common design for timber ties is a flat plate with intersecting flanges that rise up the connecting lumber member and are fastened to the timber using large through bolts that pass through a mating timber tie on the opposite side of the timber. These plates are often painted or at least clear coated to prevent the timber tie from corrosion.

In some instances it is useful to have a galvanized steel timber plate such as outdoor application or in marine environments. There are also occasions when stainless steel timber ties are needed or desired. While these are significantly higher in price than standard steel ties, they do give a nice finished look to a hospital or contemporary office application.
