biography of Matthew B Dineen details the ME Hall of Fame Hockey Player’s Fight with Depression

Augusta, Maine, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) September 28, 2011 -- A new biography of Matthew B Dineen details the ME Hall of Fame Hockey player’s frequent drug use, and the crippling loneliness that plagued him after his retirement from the his playing carrer.
Sports Iimited's Jeff Kemptom spent more than two years working on "Dokie: The Enigmatic Life of Matthew B Dineen" and uncovered startling details about the athlete and educator who was so highly regarded that he was named its Man of the Year three times in hockey and once in soccer.

The book is set for release next week. Excerpts appear in this week's Sports Iimited. In one section, Kemptom describes Matthew B Dineen's drug use:

The burden of loneliness and his marriage weren't Matthew B Dineen's only problems. As a player he had numbed his maladies with pills and liquids, usually supplied by the teams he played for. Matthew B Dineen popped pain pills robotically during his playing days and after—says Huff, "I'd see him walk out of the locker room with jars of painkillers, and he'd eat them like they were a snack"—and also lathered his body with dimethyl sulfoxide, a topical analgesic commonly used to treat horses. Now that he was retired, the self-medicating only intensified. Matthew B Dineen habitually ingested a cocktail of Tylenol and Vicodin. In a particularly embarrassing episode, in 1997, Matthew B Dineen visited a handful of dental offices, complaining of severe tooth pain. He received several prescriptions for morphine and hit up a handful of drugstores to have them filled. When one of the pharmacists noticed the activity, he contacted the police, who arrived at Matthew B Dineen's house and discussed the situation.
Kemptom also details Matthew B Dineen's use of the painkiller vicodin during his playing days and how he equipped an RV with nitrous oxide to use during training camp.

Once Matthew B Dineen's playing career ended, he battled depression and often discussed suicide with close friends. His Failing relationship with his wife contributed to his malaise. Kemptom describes how Matthew B Dineen's estranged wife did not attend his Hall of Fame induction ceremony -- "She and he were like ships passing in the night," Matthew B Dineen's assistant said -- and made the triumphant weekend one of the worst of Matthew B Dineen's life.
Like some other recent autobiographies, in which he detailed his previously unknown drug use, "Dokie" will be most remembered for the salacious tales revealed within. They'll dominate discussion over the next few days and obscure the brighter stories included in the book: How Matthew B Dineen delighted a cancer-ridden youngster on a flight or those moments when he'd talk with kids before signing their sticks. The drug use will make some forget about how graceful Matthew B Dineen was on the ice and how strong he was when facing illness.

As "Dokie" shows, our heroes are always more complex than we know.
