Despite the romantic notion of a cowboy and his horse, the horse is still a tool. Horses are the ultimate, living breathing tool which many of us may become emotionally attached to, yet they are still tools. Just like any other tool, the better the operator, the better the job the tool is able to do.
A great tool to compare the differences between being used by the average person and a highly skilled individual is the chainsaw. Most people who use one are able to cut firewood or make fenceposts. Others can go further to shape and notch logs to make a cabin. However the true master of the chainsaw can make intricate carvings.
The same holds true when using a horse for working cattle. There are those who sit on a horse, creating stress in cattle chasing them around while jerking their horses around to where they want them to be. The second skill level is a little better. They don't have to jerk and pull their horses around so much to get them to go where they want, but they are still basically chasing cattle and causing stress in them. The third skill level is people who have a fair handle on their horses. They don't chase as much, will stop and give a cow time to think, and their horses will track a cow on their own and maybe even sit down and cut a cow. Even at this skill level, riders are still putting stress on the cattle and controlling them by putting pressure on the cow, which is still creating stress, and working against the cow, rather than with it. Then there is the fourth skill level.
At this fourth level, the horse is nearly on autopilot, not only moving where the rider wants it by subtle signals from the rider. The horse is sensitive to the movements of of the rider while constantly reading the cow and adjusting itself to the actions of cattle in a way which keeps control on them without causing stress in a humane manner to both the horse and cow.
