Biomalaysia 2009 (November 19, 2009) Plenary Session: Bioentrepreneurship
Dr.Prashanth Bagali, shared his research and biotech business experiences with the audience in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre at 3.00PM.
Abstract: Dengue epidemics are becoming common in the Americas, southern Europe, North Africa, Asia, Australia, the eastern Mediterranean, the south and central Pacific and the Caribbean. It has steadily increased in both incidence and distribution over the past 40 years, resulting in 20 million cases and 24,000 dengue deaths annually. Dengue viral exists in 4 serotypes and spread by Aedes aegypti (L.) mosquitoes. Conventional immunodiagnostics and serological methods have failed because they are tedious, laborious, inaccurate, non specific and non sensitive.
Geneflux™ Biosciences developed the world’s 1st commercially available PCR based kit for early detection and serotyping of dengue called MyDENKit™ (=Malaysian Dengue Kit) in 2008. MyDENKit™ is rapid, accurate, highly sensitive (on an average 92%) and 100% specific. Our scientific challenge was to standardize and optimize a standard operating protocol (SOP) for multilocation validation across dengue epidemic countries. Different viral extraction kits were evaluated for viral RNA integrity from clinical samples.
Multilocation validation of MyDENKit™ was carried out in 9 countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, USA (San Juan), Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Cuba, using more than 5000 clinical samples. Business strategy was to strengthen Malaysian biotechnology using Malaysian made “MyDENKit™” to create a niche area in an international arena. MyDENKit™ detects and serotypes simultaneously, has saved the life of more than 100 dengue patients in the world.
Geneflux Biosciences launched 2 molecular diagnostic kits namely MuRSAFlux and Flufinder in Biomalaysia 2009.IR.Balaguru Naidu, Group CEO of Geneflux welcomed guests from Biotech Corp, exhibitors, visitors and other invitees. He told that Geneflux team is completely prepared to go to global market with five kits namely MyDENKit, MuRSAFlux, Flufinder, MyCMV and Meliokit. Molecular Diagnostic Lab. of Geneflux provides molecular screening services to private and public hospitals, research centres and university hospitals.
