Biomass heating is a process whereby biomass materials, such as plant material and organic waste, are heated to produce power, heat, steam, and fuel. There are three types of biomass fuel: forestry materials (where the fuel is a by-product of other forestry products); energy crops (where the crop is grown for the purpose of biomass heating); and agriculture residues (such as straw or chicken litter, sugar cane or maize), each presenting different benefits in terms of price and availability.
Energy efficient systems are continually being developed to address increasing environmental concerns and implementation of new legislation, in order to meet the latest sustainability targets. Biomass heating offers many benefits. Due to the robustness and versatility of biomass systems, customers may purchase materials depending on availability and price. Biomass systems can cut CO2 emissions and reduce fuel bills. As well as being a low maintenance central heating and hot water system, it can be used in conjunction with other methods on a large scale basis, making the system a versatile option.
To encourage and increase the take up of renewable energy technologies, the UK government has established funding incentives for the installation, purchasing and use of biomass systems and other energy efficient systems. To fund installations of energy efficient systems, the government has outlined schemes, such as Feed in Tariffs, which will pay the generator for every kilowatt hour of electricity generated by the renewable technology. This scheme will deliver guaranteed payments to individuals, businesses and communities, regardless of whether the electricity is used by the generator or exported back to the grid.
Due to be introduced this year, the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) follow a similar system by rewarding customers for renewable heat generated using low carbon technologies and installed by a certified installer. The Energy Saving Trust suggests switching heating fuel to renewables such as wood fuel, which will reduce CO2 emissions and help prevent climate change. There are many systems available: biomass systems, air/water/ground source heat pumps, and solar thermal, each benefitting different buildings and premises, dependant on property requirements.
PH Jones is championing the promotion of renewable energy technologies, having recently become accredited by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). PH Jones' MSC accreditation for renewable installations covers Solar Photovoltaic Systems, Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems, and Heat Pump Systems, complementing the range of renewable technologies and services offered. PH Jones has also appointed a Renewable Energy Specialist, Ian Harvey, as part of recent investment in the environmental sustainability field and renewable energy technology development and promotion.
PH Jones’ managing director Martin Jones says:
“There are both environmental and economic advantages to using renewable energy technologies, such as biomass heating systems.”
“By swapping to an energy efficient system, businesses and homes can both reduce emissions and cut fuel and maintenance costs. In addition, with a number of government funding and incentive schemes in place, the benefits of renewable energy technologies can outweigh the installation costs, becoming an affordable option for everyone”.
