Just a few months after the tragic earthquake that devastated the country of Haiti in January of 2010, BJV.TV traveled to Port Au Prince to film a video for Palm City, Florida based solar lighting company, SOL, Inc.
“I met the chairman of the board on a flight home from New York and he told me about how SOL had donated 100 solar street lights to Haiti after the earthquake to assist in the relief effort” said BJV.TV CEO Joe Stout. “I was really impressed with the philanthropic effort the entire company put forth to accommodate the donation and realized what an important story this was to share. I was on a plane to Port Au Prince a few weeks later and put together one of the most fascinating and important videos I have ever had the opportunity to create.”
What ended being a five minute video was a four-day adventure into a third world country in ruins.
“Everything about this trip was a first for our team” Stout continued. We stayed on a military base, traveled with armed personnel and saw first-hand how significant the damage was. I had never seen anything like it in my life. Every street you looked down or drove through was the same; piles of concrete and re-rod, and hundreds of thousands of people living in tents. It was a real eye opener for a variety of reasons.”
The BJV.TV team traveled to hospitals, the airport, tent cities, food and water distribution centers and disaster relief areas and saw first-hand how important the solar powered lights enhanced the effort to save lives and restore order.
“It was amazing to see just how vital this contribution was to so many different aspects of the relief and rebuilding effort. Without question, it provided a lot of great information and footage for a wonderful story. But there was another side to this story that was as equally important and that was the effort that took place in Palm City, Florida. Shipping and installing solar street lights to a third world country is a little more complex than shipping cases of water or medicinal supplies. SOL’s crew had to literally develop a light system they could get on a plane and could be assembled and installed with general labor. Then, they had to deploy staff to guide the installations and select locations for the lights. It was a major effort by the entire company to pull it off and they did it amazingly fast. I feel very fortunate to have been chosen to tell this story and work with such an amazing company” Stout said.
