http://blackdiamondmma.com/ri-kids-martial-arts/ This was the first kid’s martial arts belting ceremony held at Black Diamond Mixed Martial arts, and thus it was an important celebration and marked an important achievement not just for the students, but also for the school.
Since its inception just under one year ago, BDMMA has grown in size and now has various programs for kids and adults of all ages and skill levels. Black Diamond Mixed Martial arts will continue to grow and expand to meet the increased demand for premium martial arts training in Southern Rhode Island.
What is a belting ceremony?
A belting ceremony occurs at regular time intervals, or whenever the head instructor believes it is time to reward his students for their achievements in the martial arts classes or tournaments that have recently taken place. A belting ceremony involves the students receiving either a stripe on their belt, which signifies an incremental advance in skill, working towards a new belt level. A new color belt marks a tremendous advance in skill, and is oftentimes the goal of many students who have 3 or more stripes on their belt.
How can someone achieve a new belt level?
The main way a teacher at a high-level rewards a belt or stripe is for a student’s performance or victory at a recent tournament. Competition is the best way to demonstrate an increase in skill, because the results don’t lie! In class and sparring, we encourage our students to take it easy and avoid injuries, rarely if ever going %100 in sparring. However, in competition, its always a head-to-head match of skills and strength, and to the victor goes the recognition, and quite possibly the belt promotion.
Teachers also reward efforts during a class period. Because there are not too many tournaments for kids, Black Diamond Mixed Martial Arts belting ceremony was reflective mostly of class efforts and achievements. If a student is consistently showing up for class and demonstrating effort while seeking to constantly improve – a belt or at least a stripe will be awarded. At Black Diamond Mixed Martial Arts, we place a large emphasis on skill acquisition and goal setting. We teach our students to set achievable goals, and then take tangible steps to achieving those goals.
How long does it take to advance in rank?
It can take anywhere from 3 months to a year or 2 years to advance a full belt level. To achieve an adult blackball in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu almost always takes over 10 years of consistent training. Many have achieved this goal in a quicker time period.
What happens at a belt ceremony?
A belt ceremony involves recognition for the individual who has achieved the advancement. The teacher will talk about what the student has done to achieve the promotion, and discuss the history of the student at the school. For adult levels, oftentimes there will be a test where the student will spar with everyone in the school consecutively, and then eventually the teacher himself. This allows the teacher to further recognize the skill level of the individual in relation to other students, and positively ensure the student is worthy of the promotion.
Is the kids martial arts program on the same belting system as adults?
The belting system for kids is not the same as for adults. Obviously kids need constant positive feedback for their efforts, so belts and advancements are given out at a much more frequent pace for younger individuals. Belts in general are easier for kids to achieve, but this does not diminish the effort or the recognition of the belt! The child has still earned that ranking, and it is something to be proud of.
In turn, the child will receive confidence and increased motivation from the positive reinforcement they receive along with the belt. It is more the act of recognition that is more important than anything else. As humans, we need to feel recognition from others from out efforts and attempts. Belt ceremonies provide real feedback in regards to what is working, and how the child can continue their progress in the future.
How can my child experience the great benefits of a martial arts program?
If you want your child to be able to experience belt ceremonies and other positive events that come out of martial arts training, then you should seek out kids martial arts classes in your area. Look for a reputable school that has a specific kids martial arts program, but also adult classes as well. Try and see if the instructors are actively competing, this will show you that the school is legitimate and willing to train students at the highest level.
Once your child is enrolled in a school and attends class for some time, ask the teacher when the next belt ceremony will take place, and make sure you show up. Encourage your child to regularly attend classes and make sure that they put in their full effort. Teachers pay attention to who is working hard to improve, and who is being lazy and taking days off. Oftentimes it is the effort that is awarded by belting, more so than even overall skill.
Overall it was a successful first belting ceremony at Black Diamond Mixed Marital Arts, and we look forwards to holding the next one and seeing who can advance and demonstrate their skill acquisition in the meantime.
