The history of black dresses began with the legendary designer Coco Chanel from France, who created a chic and timeless little black dress. As years progressed, few black outfits were embraced because they were generally viewed as garments for somber occasions. In 1950, the little black dress was revived, during the rise of French couture houses which were frequently visited by elites. The French couture houses hosted regular cocktail hours, where fashion and class was exhibited in a large measure. From that period to date, the little black dress has been a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe across the globe.

The history of the little black dress goes back to almost 100 years and the timeless outfit has proved that the black hue is the hallmark of class. Black dresses can be paired in various ways and they have proved that they can surpass different historical times and work well for various occasions. A black dress can be worn to work, social functions or accessorized boldly for evening events. The black dress makes a repeated appearance in global runway shows and the only thing that changes about the black hued dress is the fabrics been used to tailor it and the silhouettes chosen for its design. The accents chosen for these dresses also vary greatly, with some featuring lace accents, others talking on short plain aesthetics and others are presented in the classic maxi length.

Lace follows a woman throughout her life, from christening dresses to wedding gowns to lace lingerie and the widow's veil. Apart from the little black dresses, the black lace dress is another fashion icon both historically and presently. Black lace dresses have created a niche in the fashion circles because of their versatility. Lace dresses became famous in the 1950’s and they have maintained this fame over the years. The traditional black lace maid’s apron-type of white lacing has stood the test of time and it is used widely as an accent style in most outfits. There is a caveat though when it comes to black lace dresses; there are times when the consequences of this adventurous trip have ended up in disastrous fashion ensembles, but where this has gone well it has been simply sensational.
In a nutshell, black is a color that stands the test of time and it is used throughout different seasons. Black dresses have shown that black is not only elegant, classy and sophisticated but that it can stand the test of time. The future with black is definitely bright! For the less adventurous souls when it comes to colors, black is always a much welcomed choice because it will never be out of place.
