Black Pottery Unique and Interesting!

The process involved in black pottery

The unique process involves the weather rock and the serpentine are crushed to powder form and thereafter mixed with water. The ratio of water followed here is 5 : 3. and this is done for clay formation. This pale brown mixture this way is devoid of any water and is then kneaded and flattened thoroughly on a wooden board. This is the way the initial slab work is made.

The point to be noted here is that this method does not involve the use of the potter's wheel at all. Instead, the entire shaping is done with the aid of a mould. This mix is then dried on camp fire by heating the same for a good five to seven hours. The heating is allowed to continue till the temperature reaches 900 C. Then it is taken out and rubbed with a local herb lead pasania pachiphylla. Locally, this leaf is called 'machee' only.

The black pottery kitchenware made in this fashion is good enough to endure any kind of domestic cooking done either on gas, firewood or even the modern day microwave. All the same, these pots, etc are more ideal for long duration simmering and slow cooking purposes and for homogenizing and condensing.
