As we know, when people died, some of them go to the Soul Society. The Soul Society looks like Edo Times of Japan. The souls lived in the Soul Society likes they were in the human world. They can’t meet their families who in the human world. They came from different times and areas. The souls make their new families. They will die, and will be poor and will be sick. When the souls died in the Soul Society, they come back to the human world again.

Some people when they died their souls don’t want to go to the Soul Society; they miss something such as their families in the human world, or hate someone in the human world. When the loneliness eats the reason of souls, they will become Hollows, and Hollows eat people’s souls whatever they are alive or dead. That was why Shinigami and Quincy kill Hollows.
To the Soul Society, this balance is very important, so they killed the clan of Quincy. It is cruel for Soken Ishida, the death of the whole clan of Quincy. But he put the hatred down. 
When his son didn’t want to inherit him to be a Quincy but to be a doctor, he told his grandson, his son wasn’t wrong, they couldn’t live as a Quincy in the human world anymore. He was happy and patient to teach his grandson what he knew. It was a very happy time between the grandfather and grandson.

Though Ryuken Ishida was not a Quincy any more, he protected his son all the time. When his son Uryu Ishida lost his ability of Quincy, he helped him to get them back.
