Bluebirds have been on a steady decline due to modernization and urbanization. The felling of trees for residential and industrial purpose has resulted in the decline in nesting cavities of the bluebird houses. Competition with other birds for nesting space has also caused a decrease in bluebirds. The rapid decrease of this species of birds can be stopped by buying proper bluebird houses for them. Handmade and unique bluebird houses are the alternative solution for the natural habitat. There are many specifications which need to be followed while looking for a suitable bluebird house.
• Areas like large lawns, open fields, gardens, pastures, etc are the best places to put up the bluebird houses due to the abundance of insects.
• The bluebird houses should be made of wood, preferably redwood or cedar. Plywood can also be used, but they should be thick enough to tolerate the extreme weather conditions.
• There should be an entrance hole of moderate size to facilitate the entry of the birds. The hole should be 1 ½ inches (eastern and western bluebirds to 1 9/16 inches (mountain bluebirds)
• Proper openings should be kept in the bluebird houses at the side, front or at the top to make it easy for cleaning the birdhouses.
• The bluebird houses should be so designed so that they can be easily mounted on any pole or support posts.
• Other than the entrance holes, drainage holes should be there to enable water to be drained out from the bird houses.
• To provide for cross ventilation, vents should be there on the peak of the bird houses. During winter season and their nesting period, these vents should be covered to protect the birds from harsh weather conditions.
• The bluebird houses should be placed 4 to 6 feet above the ground and there should be a distance of 50 to 100 yards between two bluebird houses. They are very territorial.
• The best time to put up the bluebird houses is by the end of February in areas which provide their natural habitat, although you can put them up anytime.
All the specifications need to be followed in order to bring in the bluebirds to the houses you have mounted.
