BMW: A History and Information

They became an automobile manufacturer in 1929. In 1936, production began of the sports car BMW 328. Until World War II, BMW’s main production included aircraft engine, motorcycles and automobiles. During the war, they concentrated on aircraft engine production, against the wishes of its director. Motorcycles were a side thing and automobile production came to a halt. After the war, they were then forced to survive by making pots, pans and bicycles.

In 1948 production of motorcycles started up again. BMW started building cars in 1952 in Bavaria. They started with the luxury car BMW 501, but stopped because it was too small to make a profit. A German man named Herbert Quandt bought controlling interest in BMW and invested to its future. His investment, along with sales from BMW700, BMW New Class and BMW New Six. The company prospered. They bought the license to build under Rolls Royce. Most recently, BMW has produced electric and hybrid automobiles.
