It is no surprise to learn that overheating is bad for your engine but it may surprise you that it can be particularly damaging for 1999-2005 3 and 5 series BMW six cylinder engines. This includes models such as 325i, 325ci, 330i, 330ci, 328i, 328ci 525i, 528i and 530i. Overheating the engine in these models can cause head gasket failure and even damage to the cylinder head that may require replacement. Head gasket repairs average $2500 and a cylinder head replacement can range anywhere between $3500-$5500. Because of this, it is very important to have your cooling system up to date and functioning properly. If you see your gauge beginning to climb past the halfway point, pull over immediately. A tow is much cheaper than the potential repairs.

BMW models have many causes for overheating and it is perhaps the weakest component of the car. A properly maintained cooling system will ensure your car will give you years of service. Here are 5 trouble spots to look out for.

Radiator- Typically, A BMW Radiator is notorious for failures. In most cases, the plastic becomes brittle with age and will fracture in some spots causing leaks. It is also important to make sure they have clean coolant in them to ensure they do not clog up. Inspect your radiator for cracks and signs of leaks.

Water Pump- All BMW water pump in E39 and E46 have a significant design flaw. They were originally manufactured with a plastic composite impeller. These impellers have a tendency to become brittle with age and break into several pieces. Warning signs are limited to mild to severe overheating. Many aftermarket water pump designs now have an updated metal impeller.

Thermostat- A BMW thermostat is built into the thermostat housing on these models that also contain the temperature sensor. The housings are made of plastic and will warp causing leaks. It is important to locate the housing and regularly check for leaks. The E39 and E46 thermostat should be replaced as a precaution when you replace the water pump or if you have overheated the engine.

Fan Clutch- The BMW fan clutch is the main component of the mechanical fan. It allows the fan to spin slower at lower temperatures so the engine can reach operating temperature quicker but also allows the fan to spin faster at higher temperatures to cool more efficiently. When the fan clutch fails, you will see hydraulic fluid leaking from the center. Symptoms will include overheating at a stop but returns to normal temperature when accelerating.

Coolant Reservoir- BMW coolant tanks or coolant reservoirs on E46 and E39 frequently leak around a split seam. These are easy to replace and can be done in under an hour.

Please Note: Any time a repair is made to the cooling system, the system must be bled properly to release air trapped inside the radiator, engine or heater core. Please carefully follow the bleeding procedures outlined by BMW. Failure to do so will result in continued overheating.

With careful inspection and repair of these items, your BMW will remain healthy and should provide a decade or 2 of service. If you are unsure if one of these components have failed, do not take any chances and call your local BMW professional.
