FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 13, 2011 --A few years ago, Mel Gibson wandered down to the Azuero Peninsula on Panama's rugged Pacific coast and bought some property. Property values went up when Mel came to town. Miles from nowhere may work for Mel, but most buyers are looking for slightly less "splendid isolation".

There's a little known village in Chiriqui Province Panama that until now has attracted mostly big game fishermen and eco-tourists. Boca Chica Panama lies at the end of a nicely maintained artery that leads from the Pan-American Highway to the Pacific estuary at the end of the Pedregal River. But there's more to the area than the tiny village. A handful of fledgling developments dot the surrounding landscape and several boutique lodges, mostly catering to well-heeled anglers are tucked into the hills and the many islands nearby . Tending toward the high end of the Panama housing market, these developments market to folks to whom the charm of living near this spectacular rugged coastline holds special appeal. Island views epitomize the kind of exotic tropical vistas you'd expect to see in Johnny Depp's famous pirate movies and in fact, the legends of freebooters and brigands are the reason Chiriqui's coast is called the Lost Coast Panama.

The coastline alternates between dramatic rocky cliffs and deserted beaches in a landscape reminiscent of Southeast Asia, sans the terraced rice fields. But unlike some of the other popular coastal destinations this one is neither congested nor isolated. The Lost Coast is situated less than an hour's drive from the provincial capital of David and to get there you pass through miles of completely unspoiled rolling hills and jungle. Contrast this to Pedasi with its scary element of being far, far from anywhere in the denuded Azuero's vast cattle county. Or consider the beaches within an hour of Panama City--south Florida wannabes reached only by traversing the urban sprawl. The Lost Coast imparts a real sense of something that gives every real estate investor or developer goose bumps--undiscovered potential.

The Panamanian government has pledged to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into infrastructure improvements in the province of Chiriqui. All you have to do is look around and it quickly becomes evident that the promise is being kept. The city of David sports all newly resurfaced roads and the promised airport expansion is well underway. The expansion is designed to accommodate international direct flights initially expected from Miami, Houston and possibly New York. Presently, the traveler transfers from Tocumen, the international airport in Panama City, to Allbrook, the domestic terminal. Trouble is, these two airports are a long "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" across the nightmare that is Panama City traffic. If you can't make it to Panama City by early afternoon you are stuck in the city for a night, like it or not, as the last flight to David leaves at 4:30 in the afternoon. Flights from Tocumen to David's Malek Airport are expected to commence shortly and will certainly ease this particular pain ahead of flights that by-pass the big city all together.

Another long-awaited improvement is the expansion of the Pan-American Highway from two lanes to four. This has also already begun and when completed will shave at least fifteen minutes from the drive time to the Lost Coast. The four-lane expansion of the David-Boquete Highway underway will also enhance the region's appeal as it will be possible to get from the Boca Chica and the Lost Coast to the Chiriqui highlands in a little more than an hour. There aren't too many places in the world where you can go deep sea fishing in the morning and hike a cool mountain cloud forest in the same day.

Chiriqui Province already boasts a large expatriate population that is expected to more than triple in the next five years. Although David is a small city of only about 150,000 souls, residents here find services and amenities you'd expect to see in much larger Central American cities. There are two excellent private hospitals with U.S. and Canadian trained specialists as well as high quality dental and cosmetic surgical practices. Banking, one of Panama's main industries is well represented here with dozens of branches of national, regional and international institutions. Shopping outlets are a growing sector with many choices in home goods and DYI centers and a small, but growing market in clothing and accessories. Entertainment and dining is another emerging sector. While the highland town of Boquete has long boasted a fair selection of quality restaurants, David is beginning to catch up with the opening of the Ciudad de David hotel and its excellent restaurant as well as several boutique bistros. Casinos have always had a presence in David and the largest, La Fiesta, has recently had a face-lift and expansion.

Boca Chica is near enough to 'civilization' to provide a comfort zone for those who want to take the road less traveled without completely isolating themselves from available goods and services. In this respect, it offers a great alternative to Pedasi for those seeking the coastal lifestyle. Unfortunately, Boca Chica and the Lost Coast are far more limited in terms of available oceanfront real estate. And, if the sky-rocketing property values in the Azuero Peninsula are any indication, investors looking at Chiriqui's little gem had better act fast and hope that Mel Gibson doesn't decide he likes this part of Panama too.
