Body piercing has been in existence since ancient times. Body piercing jewelry could take the form of earrings. They could range from simple studs fixed onto the lobe of the ear to many rings pierced through the edge of the ear, drops, hoops or studs with or without stones. Plugs too could be chosen. They are large and flared and are fixed into piercings. The Karen women from Burma use these types of plugs. Ear piercing and the jewellery worn was also a sign of nobility and men too were known to use earrings.
Nose piercing has been in existence as far back as the 16th century in idle Eastern countries. Its usage spread to South Asia and it is now common for women in those countries to have nose piercings as a wedding ritual. For these piercings body piercing jewelry could take the form of a gold or silver stud or maybe a colourful stone that could be precious or glass. The body jewellery used by some Aztec and Mayan tribes was feathers and bones that adorned their pierced noses and symbolized their virility.
The belly button is another area that is popular for piercings by women. The body piercing jewelry involved could be studs of metal or stone or pretty dangling pieces made of feathers or a variety of stones in many beautiful designs.
The tongue too is home to body jewellery. Some pierce the tips of their tongues whilst some pierce the sides. The eyebrows too are another popular site. Lip piercing is very common today in African and American tribal cultures. They adorn their lips with adornments known as labrets.
When choosing body piercing jewelry care should be taken of the materials used. When the choice is metal it is safe to use hard metals like Titanium or Niobium. They could be obtained in a variety of colour and will not nick or scratch. Gold or Silver are soft metals and are liable to blemish opening up breeding places for bacteria. Metals with a high percentage of Nickel are also bad for body piercing jewelry because it can hinder the healing of new piercings and also many are highly sensitive to metallic jewellery containing high percentages of nickel. Costume jewellery should not be considered as body jewellery since there is no quality in workmanship or quality of metal. Choose body jewellery wisely and protect oneself from much discomfort.
