Antarctica, January the 18th -
This is the last human outpost- the freezing continent of Antarctica, right there at the southernmost tip of the world! On 18th January, at the continent’s protected harbor of Deception Island, a rather different ceremony took place with the world-wide publication of ‘Pravas Jagacha Jagnyacha’. Authored by Veena Patil, who is the CMD of Kesari Tours, the book has been published by Ameya Prakashan. The occasion marked two landmark events; one was of course, the uniqueness of what can certainly be said to be the first ever release of a Marathi book on this icy end of the world. The other was a feeling of quiet pride that the flavours and high standards of Marathi literature have registered their Antarctica presence in great style.
Antarctica is truly the only ‘Global’ land today. No nation claims sovereignty over this Polar region. The continent recognizes no single official language. It is therefore fitting that a book pertaining to the universal passion for reading be released here.
Veena Patil has been a prolific writer when it comes to books on travelling and tourism. ‘Pravas Jagacha Jagnyacha’ has been published by Ameya Prakashan that, besides being associated with quality publications spanning many subjects and authors, also possesses a valuable portfolio of covers that have been released from places as diverse as America, London, Frankfurt, Jerusalem and Mauritius. The publication house has been credited with successfully taking quality Marathi literature to the world, and Veena Patil’s book release in Antarctica only reaffirms this.
Veena Patil is known as much for her entrepreneurial skill and writing originality as she is for her propensity to do something out of the ordinary. This South Pole sojourn therefore, comes as a logical progression from her earlier, equally inimitable publication of a book in the pressurized confines of an aircraft many thousand meters above ground. This time round, the venue was the breathtaking environs of a black-sand beach close to an active volcano that last erupted in 1970. The global launch of her book on 18th January was performed at the hands of Polar explorer and traveler/ historian, David ‘Woody’ Wood and Annie Inglis of Quark Expeditions. In attendance were the Kesari team, particularly Veena Patil herself, accompanied by Sudhir Patil, Kesari Patil, and Sunilata Patil. Quark Expeditions were represented by Expedition Coordinators Annie Inglis and John ‘Flipper’ Suta.
Why should you read this book?
‘Pravas Jagacha Jagnyacha’ is an interesting look into the life and mind of a successful entrepreneur. Written in the first person and somewhat autobiographical in content, it comes from the pen of a highly accomplished lady who can safely be said to have put the Indian tourism business on its most exciting run. The book is certainly an absorbing read. In these pages, the author Veena Patil writes upon her journey so far, including the best and worst case scenarios that make up the dynamics of tourism. She talks uninhibitedly about meeting crises head-on; about balancing profession and home, and about managing situations involving human and natural calamities. Since the pages essentially give us a ‘behind the scenes’ peek into the hard work that goes into an enjoyable tour, it races along with a roller-coaster storytelling charm that is bound to hold readers’ interest all through.
