Book seller leverages expertise to succeed as an author against the odds
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 17, 2012 --
Buford, GA — January 17, 2012 — Many bookstore owners are tempted to become authors, and Zack Mason, owner of Atlanta’s largest independent bookstores, is no exception. What does make Mr. Mason different, however, is that instead of standing on the shoreline, he decided to navigate the turbulent waters of the current upheavals in the publishing world and achieved what few authors have — a marketable, published novel.
While many bookstore owners are wringing their hands in the face of revolutionary developments in book technology, from the growing prevalence of e-readers like the Kindle and the Nook, to the monstrous growth of online giants like Amazon.com, Mr. Mason has instead fully embraced these changes. His insider knowledge of the way wholesalers distribute books allowed him to realize he could bypass traditional publishers altogether, and his familiarity with publishing standards allowed him to easily transition his work into the various e-book formats, including Amazon’s Kindle. The result? A high-quality thriller called “SHIFT”, the first in a sweeping, time-travel themed trilogy, the rest of which is to be released throughout 2012.
“I actually had a well-known agency ask to represent my work,” says Mr. Mason, “But, in the end, I chose to go another way. With a traditional publisher, an author is still expected to pay for all their own marketing, but you have to wait eternally to get published, sometimes up to 2 years. Plus, the returns are smaller. This way, I have full editorial control, I’m not at the mercy of a publisher or agent, and I retain more per book.”
Mr. Mason is not alone. With the explosion in new book technologies available to readers in the last few years, more and more authors are choosing to bypass the traditional publishers and take their works directly to the public — a development which has publishers scrambling.
Zack Mason is the owner of Books For Less, the largest independent chain of bookstores in Metro Atlanta. Books For Less has consistently grown year after year even as giants like Borders close their doors due to the uniqueness of their business model. Mr. Mason is also the author of several other titles and heavily involved in the fight against human trafficking in Metro Atlanta.
