“We are excited to have Raquel on board as our new Director for Mrs. DC America. With her unique background experience and passion for pageantry, we felt she was an excellent choice for the position,” states David Marmel, Owner and President of Mrs. America, Inc.
Raquel’s background is truly unique in the entertainment world and she continues to have many industry insiders scratching their heads. Raquel is a former U.S. Army Ordnance officer, a title that is associated with demolition, bombs and very large machine guns. She is highly trained in weapons and hand to hand combat; however in a twist of fate, Raquel went from “Boots to Bikinis.”
In 2002, Raquel was honorably discharged from the military and within months she was signed to one of the top modeling agencies in the world, Elite Models. The 5’9” commercial model soon graced lifestyle ads for Fortune 500 companies such as Coca-Cola and Stern and Foster, among many others. Her hair is featured on two hair product boxes and she has been a spokesperson in several commercials for networks such as HGTV, BET and TV Land. She also had the opportunity to beat out 15,000 women to get a finalist spot on the hit model realty-show, “She’s Got the Look, Season 2.”
Then Raquel added yet another title to her growing resume: Pageant Queen. She won the title of Mrs. Maryland America 2010-11, then battled 50 state delegates, winning 1st runner up as Mrs. America 2010-11. She was later selected as a celebrity judge for the Mrs. America 2011-12 pageant. And now, her company, An Officer and Gentlewoman, LLC, runs the Mrs. DC America pageant.
Raquel is married to Ron Thomas, a former West Point football star, turned attorney, and was previously an Ordnance officer in the Army as well. They are fondly referred to by associates as “the Real-life Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” referring to the action movie. They have two children together, Maria and Sophia, along with a robot named R2.
