BOSTON – “Raising the Roof: Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. in Song,” the Boston Children’s Chorus televised tribute concert, has earned national recognition as the best local “artistic, creative and inspirational media presentation” in the “Arts” category of the prestigious Gabriel Awards.
Produced in partnership with media partner WCVB-TV and BCC Artistic Director Anthony Trecek-King, the program was broadcast live on WCVB and aired nationally in 80 percent of the country. It was hosted by Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr., and featured BCC with the Young People’s Chorus of New York City honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King through music.
The Gabriel Awards were founded in 1965 to “recognize outstanding artistic achievement in a television or radio program or series which entertains and enriches with a true vision of humanity and a true vision of life.” The awards will be presented in New Orleans in June by the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals.
The Boston Children’s Chorus is an accomplished children’s singing group with nine choirs and nearly 300 singers ranging in age from 7 to 18 years old. It is a diverse racial, ethnic, religious and socioeconomic collection of youths who work together to create music and in the process break down barriers, build friendships, alliances, self-confidence and hope. The annual Martin Luther King Tribute Concert is BCC’s signature event and the chorus’ way of reinforcing and elevating the social significance of the holiday.
“Raising the Roof” was produced by WCVB’s Stella Gould and directed by Dorothy Will. Dave Gardiner served as sound engineer. Elizabeth Cheng is the executive producer. Bill Fine is President and General Manager of the station.
