“Many people these days know about the importance of falls in the elderly,” Dr. Herskowitz said. “But they may not realize that swallowing problems, too, account for tens of thousands of deaths annually in the United States.” He added: “It’s not just the elderly who are at risk. It’s any adult with Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, stroke, or a host of other medical or neurologic problems.”

Dr. Herskowitz and his wife, Dr. Roya Sayadi, a speech-language pathologist with the Natick (MA) Visiting Nurse Association, have been spreading the word about swallowing problems. They have spoken at libraries, senior centers, and Parkinson’s conferences and published a book entitled “Swallow Safely: How Swallowing Problems Threaten the Elderly and Others. A Caregiver’s Guide to Recognition, Treatment, and Prevention.” For more information about Drs. Herskowitz and Sayadi, please see http://www.SwallowSafely.com.

If you miss the live broadcast, by Tuesday May 3rd you can listen-on-demand to the archive at any time. For assistance with Internet radio, please see http://wsRadio.com/how-to-listen.cfm.

The host of the popular eight-year-old program, Jacqueline Marcell, took care of her parents who had Alzheimer’s disease, compelling her to dedicate her life to eldercare awareness and reform. She is an international speaker and author of the best selling book “Elder Rage” http://wwwElderRage.com.
