I recently sat down with a bride two weeks before her reception to discuss her wedding info sheet paperwork and to go over her song list. Her cocktail music consisted of the usual suspects: Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Michael Buble, etc. Dinner was more of the same: Coldplay, Van Morrison, Earth-Wind-and Fire, etc. When it came time for dance music, it looked more like the prom playlist from 1997. Nineties music dominated this brides 5 page excel spreadsheet with songs ranging from Father MC's "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" to Fugees "We All Trying To Stay Alive" to Next's "Wifey".

"It looks like the days of Big Band and Golden Oldies are coming to an end", jokes DJ Ra-Mu. The modern bride wants to party and not put people to sleep with "The Carpenter's 70's Mellow Gold" soundtrack. "We've only just begun" to see the progession of dance music at a wedding reception.

"Ten to fifteen years ago, a wedding DJ would play mostly 50's, 60's, and 70's music. Anything more current than "Tears for Fears" was considered edgy and might make nanna upset", jokes Ra-Mu. "Today, the playlists are more progessive and DJ's have more liberties to pack a dance floor. Dont get me wrong, "rumpshaker" by Wrecks'n'Effect is not quite a parent dance; however, playing more a current mix is becoming a trend."

"I think that 90's music is so popular right now because it inspires memories from childhood, high school, and college", says Ra-Mu. "It was an innocent time in which we "MmmBopped" and "Jumped Around" "smelling like teen spirit", chuckles Ra-Mu.
"People remember those good times and most likely there was a 90's song as the soundtrack."
