http://free-page.net/web/creategreatart.htm "In fact, failure is normal when you are just starting out," say Ron Smalley an art instructor living in Longmont, Colorado. "The novice knows he or she wants to complete an admirable piece of work. That is the goal of every artist: to paint an image which pleases the artist and perhaps others who happen to see the work. The question is how to do it. And tools techniques and tips often are not the answer.
"Painting with gorgeous colors on fresh paper or canvas is an exhilarating experience and the painter quickly considers, at first, all the techiques which could lead to a wonderful piece of art - especially if the first picture making attempt falls flat. "Maybe there is a better color of paint, a better brush, a different easel, cleaner water, another new painting medium," the newbie may think. Art supply companies have made millions catering to the perplexed artist.
Smalley believes it is not the tools or techniques that are the problem. Rather the understanding of strong composition and design concepts is more likely the missing ingredient.
"I painted for about 30 years before it finally dawned on me that I needed to understand the basic concepts which are characteristic of the successful human artist," says Smalley. "Those concepts were revealed in a "eureka!" experience when attended a 5-day watercolor workshop taught by Tony Couch which in Estes Park, Colorado.
"Tony taught us the seven elements of successful art composition and also the eight principles which apply to each of the seven elements."
Smalley has created an online presence specifically to explain the seven elements of size, shape, line, direction, hue, value and texture.
One may sign up for a critique of ones own work while learning about the seven elements and eight principles at the link below. Painters of all experience levels are invited to visit Smalley's Create Great Art website.
