This year’s gigantic ProMat trade show, which took place March 21st - 24th at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, included more than 700 exhibits, which showcased the latest manufacturing, distribution, and supply chain solutions. One of the 700 exhibits featured the new ActivRAC™ space saving mobile racking and shelving system designed and manufactured by Spacesaver Industrial™ out of Fort Atkinson, WI. The display was impressive, to say the least. Standing roughly twenty feet tall and thirty feet wide, it was one of the largest booths at the show. It was also one of the only fully automated mobile shelving systems at ProMat 2011.

One problem Spacesaver had to overcome: While their ActivRAC™ system was impressive even without anything sitting on its shelves, it needed to appear as though it had a purpose besides holding air. Spacesaver completely filled the racks with 200 large corrugated cardboard boxes closed with Box Latches™, which kept the focus on the one-of-a-kind ActivRAC™ and its ability to create space for revenue-generating activities rather than on the randomly sized and colored props sitting on the racking (used by other companies). The plan was to reuse the same boxes for many tradeshows in the future in order to minimize expenses and become more environmentally conscious. However, if the boxes were closed with tape, they would be an expensive one-time use purchase. That didn’t sound like a good solution to Spacesaver.

The Box Latch™ is an innovative new sustainable and patent pending packaging product that allows its users to close boxes without the need for packing tape. How, you ask? It’s simple. The Box Latch™ slides between the top and/or bottom flaps of almost any RSC (regular standard container) box and holds them tightly closed. Unlike packing tape, each Box Latch™ can be used hundreds of times and causes virtually no damage to the box. This product was an unprecedented yet perfect solution for Spacesaver’s box closure and reuse problem. David Potter, a key member of Spacesaver Industrial™ and Creative Artist, said he “looks forward to using the Box Latch™ to neatly close [Spacesaver’s] prop boxes for many trade shows in the future.”

Conveniently, the Box Latches™ provided another solution to a common trade show problem. Often, there is very little or no room for salespeople to safely store their personal belongings at trade show booths. This would have been true for Spacesaver had they not discovered the easy-access the Box Latches™ afforded them to their coats and briefcases they had stored inside their large prop boxes. Instead of checking their things at the designated “Coat Check” desk and spending money each morning to do so, the salespeople were “able to neatly store [their] things inside [their] prop boxes, but still have easy access to them by sliding the Box Latches™ off to open and sliding them back on to close the boxes,” said Potter. This helped Spacesaver’s display stay organized during the entire show.

By the end of the 2011 ProMat show, Spacesaver Industrial™ had opened and reclosed their prop boxes dozens of times. After the lights shut off on the final day, all that was left to be done was to slide the Box Latches™ off the boxes and break them down flat to be taken to the truck. Of course, the entire mobile shelving unit had to be disassembled, too, but even Box Latches™ couldn’t make that process any faster!

This was yet another example of how the Box Latch™ has proven to be an easy way to close, reopen, and reuse nearly any size box anywhere.
