Nervomatrix Ltd., an Israeli company, has received Food & Drug Administration approval to market a novel lower-back pain relief device, in the United States. The new, non-invasive system potentially offers an effective alternative to current drug-based treatments.
The patented NervoStim™ Auto-Targeting Neurostimulation system scans the back, precisely identifies trigger-points associated with pain and stimulates them with high intensity, low frequency electrical current, leading to pain reduction. The entire process is computer-controlled and automatic, and can be administered by medical technicians with only minimal training. NervoStim™ was designed for high reliability and easy incorporation into the clinical work-flow.
Nervomatrix’s proprietary breakthrough technology precisely detects and maps more than 1000 points in the back where the skin’s electrical impedance is lower than that of its surroundings, creating personalized trigger-point mapping for each patient in less than two minutes. The system then uses this information to accurately and automatically guide the delivery of high intensity, low frequency pulsed electrical current to target points, triggering a physiological mechanism that substantially reduces pain.
Unlike other systems, which cannot deal with multiple trigger-points and, therefore, require lengthy treatment sessions, NervoStim™ enables virtually simultaneous treatment of all relevant trigger-points, saving time and money.
In preliminary clinical trials carried out in Israel, 95% of patients reported significant improvement in their condition following NervoStim™ therapy, with many reporting no pain at all. Most patients were happy to undergo periodic repeat treatments, when warranted by their medical situation.
Such unprecedented results suggest a substantial leap forward in the treatment of non-specific back pain. Plans call for large-scale U.S. clinical trials of NervoStim™ to be carried out by a New York leading university hospital, with the system also to be installed at two leading New York private medical facilities.
Nervomatrix’s non-pharmacological therapeutic approach answers the growing demand among medical practitioners to reduce the widespread and often clinically unjustified use of potentially harmful pain-killers, and represents a 21st century advance over alternative pain-reduction methods, such as acupuncture, providing new hope for millions of patients around the globe.
An estimated $750 million annual worldwide market is projected for Nervomatrix’s lower-back pain treatment system. The company’s marketing model aims to make NervoStim™ affordable for medical facilities, bringing advanced Auto-Targeting Neurostimulation to the greatest number of people possible. Additional devices for treating other areas of the body are in the early stages of development.
