She is the only restaurant owner in Brooklyn who is paying homage to Black History in this way and has specials such as All You Can Eat Mussels Night, Live Music, Steak Lover's Night, Fondue Night, Early Bird Specials, It’s Chilly Out Specials, Valentine’s Day Specials and even a competition called Lola’s Gonna Cook Your Mama’s Dish.

The art represents the first mass surrender/arrest of the Civil Rights Movement, which was a technique adopted by Mahatma Gandhi. The mass arrest took place February 21, 1956 and involved individuals such as Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. All of the décor in Chez Oskar and Chez Lola is the work of their owner, Charlotta Janssen, who is responsible for the designing and printing of their menus and websites. “In these tough economic times, all of the staff performs multiple jobs. I have a wonderful staff,” Janssen stated.

The staff includes Chef Octavio Simancas who always uses fresh ingredients such as organic eggs, free-range chicken, and sustainable chocolate from Ecuador for the southern-french inspired dishes that range from Mustard Rabbit, Domestic Lamb Shank, Oven-Roasted Duck Breast, to Spicy Lamburgers, Turkey Burgers, Cobb Salads, Omelettes, Paninis and Soups. Their desserts, which are also made by the Chef, include Warm Chocolate Flourless Cake, Key Lime Pie, and Pear Blueberry Walnut Crisp. Both restaurants have a full bar with drinks such as the Vander Bender, names that play on Brooklyn streets.

Janssen, who speaks multiple languages because of her multicultural awareness attributed to her family and travels, will have prints available for purchase and an opening this Sunday, from 4-6pm at Chez Lola’s which is located at 387 Myrtle Avenue near Vanderbilt.
