Dory boats began to appear about 200 years ago as relatively small, light fishing boats. They were easy to build, easy to launch from the shore and easy to row or sail. Despite appearing "tippy" the Dory could carry a large load while remaining incredibly stable. It's not certain where the design originated but many were built on both sides of the Atlantic. Dories were popular in many parts of Europe but in the US, New England was the main focus of dory production. Dories were used extensively to fish the Grand Banks, one of the world's most important cod fishing grounds.

As an example of how seaworthy dories are, on August 12 1876 afer sixty six days sailing from Gloucester Massachusetts, Alfred Johnson landed at Abercastle in Wales, becoming the first person to make the single-handed Atlantic crossing. Johnson, a Danish born fisherman used a 20ft sailing dory named 'Centennial', managing an average speed of about 70 miles (110 km) a day, not bad for a small boat in the open sea and surviving a gale which capsized the boat.

Today's dories come in a variety of designs. There are dories designed for rowing, sailing, to take motors, white water and more. Virtually every conceivable boating use can be adopted in the ever versatile dory. Dories can be used for breaking through surf, sea fishing, meandering down placid rivers, water skiing, hauling heavy loads or just sailing along on a gentle breeze. Also, they can do all this with alot less effort than alot of other boat designs.

The modern dory is remarkably easy to put together. You could, quite simpley go to any lumber yard and buy all your materials there and then, screw and glue them all together, and there you have it, your very own hand built dory. No special tools, materials or techniques are needed. Remember, originally the dory was designed to be cheap and easy to build. Even with basic wood working skills, you can build a dory. Most average sized dories can be built in 2 - 3 weeks and for a lot less money than a shop bought one.

Finally, the key to your boat building success will be your plans. They need to be detailed yet simple to follow. They must have a complete materials list, tools list, digital photos of all tools and materials needed, step-by-step instructions of every stage of the build, explanations of each cut, measurement and angle. Also, unlimited customer back up for those times when you need to speak to a real person.

So, grab those plans and start building that boat you've always wished for. It's easier than you think.
