Bujumbura Gov’t Arrests Fleeing Burundi Opposition Leader in Tanzania

Farmington Hills, Michigan, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) January 16, 2012 -- An exiled Burundian opposition leader has been arrested in Tanzania on the orders of the Bujumbura government, his lawyer said Friday.

A man identified as an Alexis Sinduhije was detained Last Wednesday in the peaceful town of Dares Salaam, the commercial capital of Tanzania. The arrest transpired immediately after Sinduhije reached the area after traveling all the way from Uganda. Habas Nyange, Sinduhije’s official lawyer, informed AFP during a phone call.

“Burundi authorities accuse him of involvement in a murder which happened several years ago and they are doing everything to have him extradited,” Nyange said. “All this is happening without any international arrest warrant against him.”

Burundian officials declined to comment on the arrest, but the leader of the country's main opposition coalition, Leonce Ngendakumana, confirmed the arrest. Sinduhije, a former journalist and the head of the Movement for Solidarity and Development party, fled Burundi following disputed 2010 elections and the ensuing unrest that also forced other opposition leaders into exile, Yahoo! News reports.

Based on some recent statistics, opposition leaders from Burundia have all but fled when claims of massacring them surfaced, effectively dissolving the resistance. Because of this, only a handful of people are left to fight for their beliefs.

Going back to Sinduhije’s case, the fact that no international arrest warrant has been issued means that he’s in for a fight. And if his lawyer presents the right ideas and angles and has the right guts to do it, then he will undoubtedly win.
