The olive oil industry has experienced such a tremendous growth that it does not only reach us through the food industry any longer, but it also extends to cosmetics and some pharmaceutical drugs.

(Free-Press-Release.com) December 25, 2009 --
When it comes to olive oil most us are familiar with the basics – in that olive oil is derived from olives. We might even go as far as knowing the various types of it, such as virgin olive oil and extra virgin olive oil, but in general the buck stops there for most of us. At this point we might think, “well I am not a world class chef nor do I deal with the industry of olives, so why do I need to know anything else about olive oil?” That statement is true. In fact, it does not concern us nor affect us directly unless we consume it or use it frequently. However, being that the use of olive oil is not limited to cooking and has many other benefits, it becomes even more paramount to familiarize ourselves with its benefits and the health factors associated to olive oil.
For instance, olive oil is also used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and is even used as an ingredient in some soap products we may be using currently. As such, being that the olive oil industry has flourished and has grown to such extent that it touches upon other industries that come into contact with our immediate lives, it is paramount that we do not limit our knowledge about olive oil, but rather cultivate and increase it. Perhaps we are in contact with olive oil more than we may think, and as such we should familiarize ourselves with the notion and importance of the olive oil we use and the immediate and long term effects that it may have on our health and well being.
This article’s intent is to address some facts associated with olive oil and perhaps spark our interest in an industry that has produced about 2.7 million tons of olive oil in the year 2007.
Analogically, we should consider that all of us are not accountants, lawyers, or doctors; but that does not prevent us from familiarizing ourselves with our taxes, the laws of the land we live in, or the various medical and health issues that may or may not be directly related to our wellbeing and health. Therefore, it is not that we should learn and know the intricate details of the olive oil we buy and consume, but simply that all the types of olive oil we come in contact with are not equal. In fact, with the numerous nations that produce olive oil and the manner in which they produce it – not to mention the many kinds of olives that exist – by default, it will create olive oil that varies drastically.
Let us use an analogy to further develop this point. For the same reason that we may summarize men’s formal wear/attire as a suit or tuxedo, while at the same time being consciously aware of the numerous kinds of suits that exist – perhaps because of the exposure we have to the many kinds of suits – we know instinctively and by experience that the quality of the suit that we buy is closely related to the materials used, the brand name, the designer, and the manner of production. Therefore, we may categorize the extract of olives as olive oil but we should not falsely conclude that the difference only lies in the prefixes such as virgin, or extra virgin. In fact, this kind of categorizing olive oil is similar to categorizing formal wear as a suit to that of a tuxedo, which is all essentially the same, in that they are all formal attire.
As such, there are a few health facts we should become aware of when it comes to olive oil:
In general – keeping in mind that all olive oil is not equal – health studies indicate that higher quantities of monounsaturated fats in our diets may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. This is a significant fact because olive oil is rich with monounsaturated fats namely oleic acid.
Olive oil can help with regulating our cholesterol level.
Olive oil can lower our blood sugar level and hence our blood pressure.
Given that olive oil has a number of health benefits, we could perhaps see why it becomes paramount to note the source where it comes from and the manner in which it is processed, among other such factors. However, we should note that because of the health benefits that olive oil may have for the individual, high consumptions of any product can create serious health risk. Thus, we should always consult with our physician about a proper dietary prescription. Nonetheless, our physician may prescribe a higher consumption of olive oil but it is up to us to find the proper manufacturer and brand name to purchase from. The following analogy might serve as a good example to help clarify this point. Once a year we all have to declare our income taxes but the tax breaks and adjustments are specific to our needs and furthermore finding the right accountant is our duty.
In summation, the more informed we are about anything that is in direct contact with us such as olive oil the better our ability to discern and benefit from its effects; we must also practice caution when it comes to the harmful side effects it may bring. As such, we at Alexander’s Imports do not just take great pride in our work but also educate the public about the importance of high quality olive oil.
