Members of Burmese Community Support Rep. Crowley’s Burma Visit

January 11, 2012

(Queens, New York) – Members of Burma Point and the Burmese community in New York voice their support for Rep. Joseph Crowley’s upcoming two-day visit to Burma. Burma Point hopes that Congressman will have a successful trip amid some limited political reforms taking shape and democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is planning to contest in the next bi-election in the country.

Rep. Joseph Crowley serves New York’s District 7, which encompasses East Elmhurst, Woodside, and Jackson Heights, home to some of the biggest Burmese populations in New York City. The Congressman has been a great supporter of Burma issues for more than 10 years. In support of Burma democracy movements, Congressman Crowley not only championed Burma sanction bills in the House of Representatives, he also successfully endorsed democracy icon Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal.

“As this will be a ground breaking visit for a U.S. Representative, Rep. Crowley deserves not only the support of the Burmese people living in his New York district but also our democratic leaders and fellow Burmese back home,” said Moe Chan, an executive director of Burma Point.

“If the current authority in Naypyidaw were kind enough to welcome and host the U.S. lawmaker and explain steps to achieve national reconciliation before 2015 it is possible U.S. sanctions could be lifted in due course. Otherwise, sanctions will still be in place.” Moe Chan added.

Burma Point, based in New York, has been a promoter of democracy for Burma. Burma Point is a member of Democratic Alliance for Burma, which is one of the four pillars of the largest political entity National Council of the Union of Burma. Burma Point also works closely with many ethnic leaders.
