For many decades, the business community (and the Pentagon) have loudly complained about the low quality of high school graduates. A great percentage of the young people need remedial training before they can do even the simpler jobs.
But why has this complaint been ineffective? Why have business leaders been unable to persuade the public schools to do a better job?

http://www.Improve-Education.org “Indeed, this is one of the great stories of the last 50 years,” says Bruce Price, founder of Improve-Education.org. “Business leaders have always been very concerned about education and, in a previous time, were able to have a decisive influence. That time seems to be gone. Now, the Education Establishment routinely ignores whatever business leaders suggest or request. It’s imperative that the business community understand the reality of American education. The people at the top are inspired by collectivist visions, and frankly don’t care what mere business people think on any subject. Commerce and Education are now two different worlds. This is a huge problem for the US.”
Bruce Price has prepared “A REPORT TO BUSINESS LEADERS ABOUT EDUCATION,” now on the FastpitchNetworking.com site ( bit.ly/o8l5jj ).
This practical analysis reveals the historical basis for the problems, and sketches out the easiest solution. To sum up: business leaders must decide for themselves what their standards and priorities are, and then fight for them. The Education Establishment is not going to help on its own.
“I’ve been tracking this story for several years,” Price recalls. “I noticed that business leaders (and top brass from the military) would write columns in the local paper, lamenting the low quality of young workers and new recruits. But what surprised me the most was that the complaints were so meek. In these pieces, the leaders didn’t demand improvement but rather expressed their bafflement that no improvement was forthcoming. Why wouldn’t the education professors help out?? Our big dogs don’t bark any more. It was more of a whine. I found this very troubling.”
“The core of the mystery,” Price explains, “is that the business community tends to be practical and not very interested in left-wing ideology. Conversely, the Education Establishment tends to be deeply ideological, antagonistic to business, and indifferent to what ordinary citizens consider practical. These elite educators have their collectivist vision, and want to set up schools that will serve that vision. And to heck with everything else. Business people aren’t likely to see the huge schism. The first step would seem to be to stand back and have a reality check.”
Bottom line: business leaders are mostly from Mars; the Education Establishment is from Venus. The two groups can hardly communicate at all. First step for the business community: stop asking the top educators for answers. This approach hasn’t been very useful in the past.
“A REPORT TO BUSINESS LEADERS ABOUT EDUCATION (prepared by Improve-Education.org)” is the full title of this new report, which seeks to draw a map of the past and as well the future. The report urges business leaders to accept the new cultural reality, and start from there. Study the methods and theories in the schools that are causing the decline in education, and systematically eliminate those flawed ideas, one by one.
The report highlights a number of obvious problem areas: bad reading methods; failed math instruction; counter-productive classroom techniques such as Constructivism and Cooperative Learning; and in general an avalanche of fads and fallacies.
