Cal Martial Arts USA Team Champions win 4 Gold medals, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze
California Martial Arts Institute, formerly North Bay Kung Fu, sent its newest USA team to compete at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas this last weekend, April 2nd thru 4th, at the USA Open Championships and Junior Olympics. These two world-class events give competitors of all ages and skill levels an opportunity to test their abilities in kata (forms), kumite (fighting), and weapons with international competitors.
This young team had tough competition and was against exceptional and experienced competitors, but prevailed winning 4 golds, 3 silver, and 4 bronze. Charlie Beatty, age 6, started the weekend off strong, winning gold in intermediate kata and silver in intermediate kumite. Don Hart won two gold medals in men’s weapons for ages 35+ and Maya Mikkelson won bronze in girls advanced kata ages 18-20 years. Both Ilan Zur and Francis Hyde-Gonzalez won gold and bronze, respectively, in Iaido (Japanese Swordsmanship) for ages under 18. Ryan Bigarani won silver in men’s int/adv kata for 18-34 year olds. Milton Bland won silver in Iaido for 18+. In men’s kumite, Don Hart and Milton Bland tied for bronze.
CMAI’s USA team is coached by Sifu Tim McFarland (Head Coach), Sifu Aaron Beatty, Sensei Tony Johnson, Sensei Josh Goessling, and Sensei Lilly Freeland.
The specific purpose of the U.S.A. Team is to foster and perpetuate international feelings of good will and respect, while increasing foreign and domestic awareness of cross cultural companionship and understanding through rigorous training, friendly competition, and martial excellence.
