Calgary Audi Dealerships Unite in the Fight Against Juvenile Diabetes

(CALGARY, AB) - South Centre Porsche joined Glenmore Audi, Royal Oak Audi, and Fifth Avenue Autohaus yesterday to present a cheque for $40,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in Calgary. Shelley Swirski of JDRF was more than pleased to accept the cheque on behalf of the Foundation, stating that the monies donated will go directly to research aiding in the cure for juvenile diabetes. Craig Shostak of South Centre Porsche and Jerry Sturko of Fifth Avenue Autohaus were on hand for the special presentation. In addition, Glenmore Audi's Doug Shostak and Lori Sturko, and Royal Oak Audi's Murray Dorren completed the quartet of dealerships that banded together to make this generous gift.

"It's not too often that our dealerships collaborate like this," said Doug Shostak. "That we were all of like mind and recognized the need to support JDRF was pretty remarkable in its own way." It was a family collaboration as well since the Shostak and Sturko families are represented in all of these dealerships.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was founded in 1974 by parents of children with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. JDRF's mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. The incidence rate of type 1 diabetes is rising by three to five percent in Canada; the greatest rise occurs in five- to nine-year- olds.*

"It's true what they say, that in giving you receive much more," said South Centre's Craig Shostak. "Today was the kind of day that put everything in perspective."
