Caltrans Selects Leotek GreenCobra™ LED Roadway Luminaires for Dumbarton Bridge

Milpitas, California, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) February 3, 2012 -- MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA – February 3, 2012 - When the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) decided to change out the high pressure sodium roadway lights on the Dumbarton Bridge over San Francisco Bay, they selected the Leotek GreenCobra™ LED luminaire for its superior lighting performance, substantial energy savings, reduced maintenance costs, and reliability.

The GreenCobra™ features a precision micro-lens optical system designed to place light on the roadway and not waste spill light off of the bridge. This optical system provides an extremely uniform light pattern assuring excellent visibility and improved safety on the bridge. Most remarkably, Caltrans replaced their 400W HPS units (utilizing 465 system watts) with 183 watt GreenCobra™ LED luminaires, realizing an energy savings of over 60%.

The Dumbarton Bridge spans the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay. The salt environment, constant vibration, and famous fog present unique challenges to any lighting solution. Leotek seals their optical system to IP-66, assuring that there is virtually no moisture intrusion to degrade the LEDs. In addition, the polyester powder coat finish provides superior corrosion resistance to the environmental salt and pollutants. Finally, the rugged 4-bolt mounting system exceeds even the rigorous Caltrans vibration standard. Since the LEDs have a life rating in excess of 20-years, it is critical that even in a demanding bridge application, the luminaires are designed to remain rigidly affixed to the mounting arm for decades.
