Can Expats Afford To Return To Britain?

May 11, 2010

Samantha Milner, an expat in Portugal, looks at whether she could afford to return to the UK.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 11, 2010 -- British expats in Portugal, Spain, or any of the other popular expat locations usually tend to keep informed about what’s going on back in the UK.

Most of the popular British newspapers and magazines can be purchased and if not, there’s always the internet to check out BBC.co.uk and other popular news services.

Samantha Milner left the UK in Summer 2008. She told Living In The Sun: “What interests me the most is how much more expensive the country has now become since I left. FI can’t believe the silly prices they are now charging for car tax, insurance and petrol.

“In comparison when we got our first car in Portugal recently our car tax and insurance bill for the year was actually lower than what the car tax on its own would cost us in England. This is a major difference and not one that I am willing to pay.”

Along with the rising costs of owning ad running a car in the UK there are many other rises to consider. Recently many expats have had to move back to the UK for employment reasons. But the question is how all these ‘ex’ expats are coping with the higher costs and whether they are willing to pay them.

“I am not saying the prices in Portugal are perfect because they are not,” Sam continued. “In the summer I have to pay a fortune to keep me in supply of my favourite tubs of “Ben & Jerrys” and the petrol is pretty expensive too. But all the everyday items that we all desperately need are very reasonable.”

Living in the sun is proud to announce Samantha Milner’s personal account of the living expenses in Portugal. You can read her account in full by visiting: http://livinginthesun.info/portugal/could-afford-to-live-in-britain-now/
