Canada Day National Protest : Protest Police Tactics At G20 Toronto
Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://www.citizennewsnetwork.org This protest was started to protest the actions of the police, security forces and government during this weekends G20 in Toronto. As a Canadian, I was deeply ashamed of the way our country welcomed the world. Civil rights and basic freedoms were suspended during the G20 and broad new powers were secretly added to the Public Works Protection Act. This newly expanded act gave the police and security forces the power to violate our rights and freedoms as Canadians.
Peaceful protesters were met with batons, pepper spray, tear gas and rubber bullets, even the media seemed to be targeted for arrest. We have received so many reports of police violence, false arrest, police raids and secret detentions, that we could never cover it all here.
There are many reports also surfacing that the "Black Bloc" was made up almost entirely of undercover police. The undercover agents allegedly were the main perpetrators in the police car fires and window smashing incidents. The police then used these acts to justify a violent crackdown on all protesters, media and many residents who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The official police count is 562 arrests, we have however received many reports that the number arrested could top 2,000 people.
Many people that I have talked to have said, "come on the police would never do that". The tactic of police using "Agent Saboteurs" is not new and is something police have been caught doing in the past. During the montebello protests in Quebec, police had to admit that 3 "Black Bloc" members caught on video were actually police (See Video Below) . Please watch the video of the 3 men being confronted about being police, then 2 days later it was confirmed that the 3 were in fact undercover police.
As Canadians we should all be absolutely outraged by these actions, we should also demand accountability from police and the government. The actions of these police put countless lives in danger and denied Canadians the right to hold peaceful demonstrations.
Seeing completely peaceful and unarmed Canadian men, women, children and even the elderly fired upon with rubber bullets and tear gas was surreal to say the least. I watched a group of 20-30 seniors that were holding a sit-in far away from the main protests, circled by riot police. The riot police did not even ask them to stand up and leave, they simply closed in and beat them with batons. This was done in the full view of several prominent journalists, who were also beaten and arrested when they started taking pictures and asking the police to stop.
There are so many stories of brutal abuses by those who were supposed to be there to protect and serve, that we could never fit them all in this space.
We cannot let these crimes against our citizens and visitors go unanswered. Join us on Canada Day from 12PM- 1PM in every city, and let our voices be heard, so this can NEVER happen again.
We will be protesting at all provincial legislature buildings in the capital cities, and at city hall in all other cities. If you are interested in becoming a local organizer, please email the group admin or email admin@citizennewsnetwork.org
