Canada Pharmacy Online Finds It Needs a Stroke to Quit Smoking

November 8, 2011

Smoking is a very difficult habit to give up, and people try different methods including medication to quit smoking.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 8, 2011 -- A stroke does have at least one benefit in that it can kick off the bad habit of smoking in people. Very often, a stroke damages part of the brain responsible for generating emotional responses. Canada Pharmacy Online follows up on a study conducted by researchers claiming people deciding to quit smoking were more likely to meet with success after experiencing a stroke than those who did not consider quitting at all.

Brain Controls Emotions

The brain is a network of billions of cells working together processing information and transmitting signals through neurotransmitters. After experiencing a stroke, abnormalities appear in the brain having considerable effect on emotions.

For instance, a pleasurable habit or addiction in the form of smoking is processed by part of the brain that interact with dopamine, a chemical or neurotransmitter. Emotions like happiness or sadness is directly affected, if sufficient quantity of dopamine is not produced in the brain.

Study Finds Direct Relation between Stroke and Urge to Quit Smoking

Results of the study published in the journal Stroke elaborated on factors influencing the urge to smoke after experiencing a stroke. Researchers found there were biological and psychological factors influencing the results. Research was conducted in Spain at the Josep Trueta Hospital. People generally buy Nicorette Fresh Mint Gum, an over-the-counter medication from Canada Pharmacy Online to quit smoking.

A total of 110 patients surviving stroke were followed for a whole year after they were discharged from hospital. These patients admitted to smoking at the time they were admitted to hospital. On discharge, 76 patients had given up smoking. The remaining 44 patients remained without smoking after the observation period of one year. Results indicated patients suffering from brain damage at the insular cortex were twice as certain to quit smoking in comparison to patients with other brain injuries.

People use antidepressants to regulate chemicals in the brain including serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, or a combination of these chemicals. The required level of chemicals is controlled in the brain improving mood and bringing relief from symptoms of depression. Similarly, the brain registers habits related to deterioration of health as well.

In the present study, around 33% of patients already knew smoking could result in stroke, 33% did not know it could cause stroke, while 33% did not consider it a risk factor at all. Results backed other ongoing studies connecting the insular cortex in the brain and response to addiction. In this case, analyzed data revealed a direct link between smoking and stroke. Researchers found the study may actually find appropriate treatment based on individual symptoms. A system could be devised whereby education programs could be arranged for likely candidates of stroke due to smoking.

Addicted individuals are already at risk of getting heart attack. Researchers have now established the risk of stroke is approximately two to three times more in the case of smokers. The good news is the risk factor becomes normal, if affected people quit smoking. This is precisely why results from the study extend hope for the future, according to Canada Pharmacy Online. People are likely to survive, as the risk of stroke comes back to normal within 2 to 5 years after giving up the lifestyle habit.
