Canada Pharmacy Suggests Lifestyle Changes To Avoid Stroke from Prehypertension

October 15, 2011

Prehypertension leading to stroke? Recent research suggests the condition does increase the risk by almost 55%.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 15, 2011 -- Over the years, the number of people suffering from pre-hypertension has increased. The medical condition has been associated with increased risk of visual loss, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, heart attack, and now new research reveals even slight increase above normal levels raises the risk of people getting stroke. Our Canada pharmacy firmly believes lifestyle diseases can be avoided by adopting healthy changes in daily life. Stroke is the fourth largest cause of death in the United States, and it is important to understand conditions that increase the risk of getting it.

How to Identify Prehypertension

In the year 2003, normal BP readings were revised and brought down to 120/80 mmHg. The threshold was revised necessitating the need to target a BP goal. Pre-hypertension levels for systolic BP or condition when heart pumps blood into arteries ranged between 120 - 139 mmHg, whereas diastolic BP or condition when heart refills blood between heartbeats ranged between 80 - 89 mmHg.

There is a possibility of systolic and diastolic BP readings contradicting each other in terms of falling within range. In such circumstances, the upper reading must be taken to identify the condition of pre-hypertension. For example, if the BP reading is 116/85, pre-hypertension condition is confirmed even though the reading of 116 falls within the systolic range. The higher diastolic reading of 85 confirms the condition. The same parameter has to be used as a matter or rule to check for the condition of pre-hypertension.

Review of Earlier Studies Confirm Pre-Hypertension Can Cause Stroke

A detailed review was conducted by researchers using data compiled from 12 studies conducted in the past involving over 500,000 people from across United States, India, China, and Japan. Results astonished our Canada pharmacy, as researchers found people suffering from pre-hypertension were 55% more likely to get a stroke when compared to healthy people with normal BP irrespective of gender or age. Even conditions like obesity, smoking, cholesterol, diabetes did not change results.

Going further, researchers compiled results for data segregated into two different groups; one consisted of people with readings at the lower end of pre-hypertension, while the other consisted of people at the upper end. Results indicated people in the upper hypertensive category had 79% increased risk of stroke over normal people. The risk factor came down as hypertension levels came close to normal. However, the fact that 25% to 46% of participants in the study were hypertensive was worrisome as earlier studies had put the figure at 25% in the United States.

Recommendations to Prevent Pre-Hypertension

People find it easier to control lifestyle diseases like high BP with medication. They buy Diovan and other prescription drugs to control hypertension. Nevertheless, our Canada pharmacy endorses expert opinion that lifestyle habits have to be changed in order to bring down BP including giving up smoking and alcohol. Regular exercise is required combined with a nutritious low-salt diet plan to maintain the appropriate body mass index. Research has proved pre-hypertension can be brought down with lifestyle changes. People can always resort to prescription drugs under medical supervision if these lifestyle changes do not work.
