About Valerie Speer
This Alberta-based acrylic painter is a self-described “immersionist” who has absorbed herself in her environment before expressing it in her paintings “The landscape we live in is alive and constantly speaking to us, bringing hope, reflecting the power, creativity and personality of God,” says Speer. “In our experience with our environment we can discover life changing moments and intimacy with our creator.” Speer’s style (as expressed in her prairie and wilderness landscapes) is simplistic yet powerful style, similar to that of Group of Seven.
Speer received her formal training at the Okanagan College in the Fine Arts program, and later pursued Audiovisual Communications in Edmonton, training in photography and video production. After moving to the prairies she took painting again having found the need to reflect the landscape she was experiencing. Prior to that Speer lived in Jasper where she discovered Lauren Harris’ rendition of Maligne Lake. “He captured an essence that my photography could not. As I began to paint the prairies, I took note of the simplicity of line and use of light and was pleased with how it evoked my feelings of the places I was reflecting on. The big skies, interesting coulees and rawness of the weather systems have challenged and inspired me. Spending time in the mountains evokes feelings of vulnerability while being overwhelmed by the stunning grandeur that is hard to fully drink in. I strive to capture those moments when we are stopped in our tracks by the beauty around us, food for our soul that we feed on long after the experience has passed.”
Today, Speer resides in Rosebud, Alberta. She has numerous originals and prints on display at the Rosebud Centre, in Rosebud and is increasingly receiving commissioned assignments for her work.
