Toronto--Canada’s 25th largest charity, Help Eliminate Disease and Addiction Canada (“HEDAC”), has just confirmed the successful release of Canada’s single largest shipment, shipped by boat on the 10th of this month, of essential medicines to Haiti, in response to the recent earthquake.

After committing to ongoing Haitian relief last month in New York, with a first shipment of approximately five million (5,000,000) pills, HEDAC is over-delivering. This first shipment, containing 15,000 Kilograms of World Health Organization certified pharmaceuticals, consists of 553 boxes, consisting of 54,000 bottles of the anti-retroviral Zidolam, the anti-fungal Fluconozol, and the broad-spectrum anti-biotic Ciprofloxacin, for a combined pill total of just under eight-million (8,000,000).

In order to efficiently distribute these medicines to those in urgent need throughout Haiti and the Dominican Republic, HEDAC has partnered with leading US-based AIDS charities, Aid for AIDS International, and Housing Works. Dedicated charity representatives, working the Dominican Republic ground operations, will receive these medicines on March 28th, 2010 and, through hubs-and-spokes distribution channels, bring them to the ailing victims.

This historic emergency response was made possible by a fundraising and logistics collaboration between the Canadian and American charity sectors, pioneered by Steve Mortfield (Director of HEDAC), Raymond Adelson (Liaison, and Not-For-Profit Logistics Consultant), and Shy Kurtz LLB, BCL, (Author, International Charity Spokesperson and Fundraising Strategist).

A relatively unknown organization just two years ago, HEDAC is quickly catching the attention of charities, NGOs, and governments around the world. Its “hybrid” Fundraising techniques, colloquially described as “the new philanthropy”, seek to use for-profit principles of profit, competition, and efficiency to address charitable purposes, by aligning the interests of donors and charities to maximize transparent philanthropy and eliminate fundraising fees. By relying on proprietary methods that combine mathematics, legal, and economic principles, HEDAC has created a never-before-used model to fundraise that stimulates the local economy, while helping the world. By merging for-profit with not-for-profit economies, HEDAC is putting theory into practice, as donors are introduced to new economies created for the purposes of donation, rather than for the purposes of consumption.
