FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
D.C., Washington, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) January 16, 2012 --

The ratings given by the National Institutes of Health are that heart disease is the leading cause of death and that cancer is the second leading cause of death in Americans. These statistics were taken from studies done by new prevention measures instituted to help to reduce the impact of the disease on human lives in the United States which included intense screening coupled with treatments that were made available to those who screened positive for the disease. The statistics were based on profiles used in 2010 of 1,530,000 people who had been diagnosed with the disease. Of those diagnosed patients, 572,000 died from their disease. According to the National Cancer Institute some 12 million Americans are alive since 2007 after having been diagnosed with the disease. That number of diagnosed patients is adding to the financial impact that is causing focused activity to prevent more people from becoming diagnosed with the disease.

The mortality statistics are significant to rate the disease as a primary risk to the lives of millions of Americans. However, the cost of treatment is also significant and is bringing to light more people who have the disease which is changing the numbers of those estimated to have the disease, those who are living with the disease and those who have died from the disease. In addition, the cost of treating those who are diagnosed with the disease is equally significant. The cost of adequate treatment is estimated at $270 billion according to the NCI. Direct medical costs, including health expenditures: $102.8 billion. That enormous burden on the country has focused attention on developing new ways to reduce the incidence of the disease through prevention methods that included changes in behavior and more attention to environmental hazards that can cause the increase in the numbers of people diagnosed with the disease. Those efforts also include providing screening and treatment to populations in America that have not had access to screening and treatment for the disease. Also adding to the statistical numbers are the projected patients among the elderly whose numbers are said to be increasing.

These statistics were taken from death certificates that had listed the cause of the death. There are registeries that help statisticians to gather their data and to arrive at statistical figures. Also, the increased screening measures have helped to provide figures that make the assessment of living diagnosed patients more easily accessible. These figures are also used to estimate the loss of revenue caused by those patients who are unable to return to work. In addition, those workers who have been exposed to carcinogens due to their occupation have been identified. The statistics show that the higher incidence of the disease among workers exposed to carcinogens has significantly impacted the numbers of patients and subsequent deaths of those patients. These statistics are conclusive that Americans are more likely to die from this disease than from any other risk currently endangering their lives outside of heart disease. As the second leading cause of death in the United States, more effort is being made to address work place carcinogens that cause massive incidents of cancer and are as dangerous to the health of American workers as smoking was proven to be.
