The scourge of cancer is devastating our country, Nigeria. More families are affected daily, with limited options for their care. Over the past 10 years, Dr. M. Obinna Nwaneri (who currently practices as part of the University of Minnesota Physicians, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA and Fairview Southdale Hospital Medical Oncology Clinic, Edina, Minnesota) has remained involved in the health care issues in Nigeria especially as it relates to cancer education, cancer screening, capacity building/training, available treatment options and access to care.

As part of this effort, Dr. M. Obinna Nwaneri and Dr. G.T.N. Ajakpo will commence a cancer clinic which will initially run 3-4 times a year based on demand and other logistical support issues.

The basic structure will be as an outreach cancer clinic servicing to complement the care already being provided by the doctors and other health care practitioners in Nigeria. We will bring the expertise and training in medical oncology (cancer) screening, diagnosis and treatment to Nigeria and for Nigerians. For most Nigerians, this aspect of their care is available in only a few centers in the country and for others who can afford to go outside the country. For some others, who can afford the cost of care abroad, they are unable to travel due to limitations of the illness and/or rapid progress of the illness.
Through this new initiative, we hope to bring some of the recent advances in cancer management to Nigeria. Over the next 3-5 years, oncologists (cancer specialists) from the USA, working at The Nwaneri Cancer Clinic in Abuja, Nigeria will progressively expand the focus/scope of cancer care for the Nigeria patient. We will do this by providing regular cancer consultation for those individuals and their families with the unfortunate and life threatening condition of cancer.

About Sauki Hospital

The Sauki Private Hospital is a private hospital in the heart of Abuja, Nigeria. It was founded and is run by Dr. G. T. N. Ajakpo, who is a general practitioner. In a bid to expand the clinical services to its patients in Abuja and all Nigerians in general, this hospital, Sauki Private Hospital is collaborating with Dr. M. Obinna Nwaneri to commence this first joint effort in Abuja, Nigeria for a dedicated cancer clinic to be run as an outreach program, and will be called the Nwaneri Cancer Clinic. This is an innovative endeavor that is expected to expand the scope of services available to the unfortunate patients and their families with cancer diagnoses in Nigeria.

Dr. M. Obinna Nwaneri currently works as a medical oncologist and hematologist as part of the University of Minnesota Physicians (UMP) based at the Fairview Southdale Hospital-Southdale Oncology Clinic, Edina, Minnesota. He brings the expertise of specific training and experience in the field of oncology (cancer diagnosis and treatment) to Nigeria and for the Nigerian patients with cancer.
