Cantey Hanger Attorney Allan Howeth Named
2009 Blackstone Award Recipient by Tarrant Bar
Outstanding Young Lawyer Caroline Harrison also to be honored May 4
FORT WORTH, Texas (April 1, 2010) – Allen Howeth, a partner with Cantey Hanger, is the recipient of the 2009 Blackstone Award, the most prestigious honor bestowed by The Tarrant County Bar Association.
Howeth will be recognized May 4 during the Law Day Awards Dinner at the Fort Worth Club. The Tarrant County Bar Association and the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association celebrate and recognize outstanding members for the associations’ most prestigious awards.
Other honorees May 4 are Cantey Hanger’s Caroline Harrison (Outstanding Young Lawyer), Judge Charles Bleil (Silver Gavel Award) and attorney Steven C. Laird (Professional Award).
Howeth is the seventh Cantey Hanger attorney to receive the Blackstone Award, which was inaugurated in 1963 and is awarded annually “to a senior member of the bar, based on a career demonstrating ability, integrity and courage. No other attainments or activities, civic, political, religious, military, social, judicial, or otherwise, shall be considered.” Ira Butler, Sr. (1969), Carlisle Cravens (1974), J.A. (Tiny) Gooch (1977), Cecil Munn (1993), Whitfield Collins (1994) and Judge Bill Hughes (2000) were Cantey Hanger attorneys recognized previously.
“I’m very, very pleased. I’ve always been an admirer of people who have won this award,” Howeth said. “As a much younger lawyer, I never thought in terms that I might some day get this.
“It is humbling to realize that I could be getting this award, which has been given over many years to local outstanding attorneys, most all of whom I know or knew, and greatly respected, especially the several from my own firm, Cantey Hanger.”
Howeth joined Cantey Hanger in 1963 and has worked dutifully, professionally and tirelessly to produce outstanding work for clients and the firm. He served as Cantey Hanger Managing Partner from 1985-2004 and is a former section head of the Taxation, Trust and Estates, Small Business Organizations Group.
His legal expertise includes individual and business tax planning, purchase and sale of business organizations, estate planning, probate and trust-related matters. He is Board Certified in Estate Planning and in Probate Law, Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
A native of Fort Worth, he received his law degree from Southern Methodist University in 1963 after having graduated in 1960 with his B.A. from Texas Christian University.
Howeth has served as president of the Texas Academy of Probate and Trust Lawyers, TCBA and Fort Worth-Tarrant County Junior Bar, and a fellow of the Tarrant County Bar Foundation and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He is a former board member of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
