Carbon Solutions Ltd. on the Approval of New Soil Carbon Methodology

(Free-Press-Release.com) February 9, 2012 -- A new soil carbon methodology has been given international approval. This new methodology is to encourage smallholder farmers in Kenya and even globally, to adopt improved farming techniques, increase their resilience to climate change, boost productivity, and earn carbon credits.

The World Bank has developed this methodology for the Smallholder Agriculture Carbon Finance Project that is run by the non-governmental organization Vi Agroforestry in western Kenya, Africa. This first methodology on soil carbon has been approved by the Verified Carbon Standard as a new approach for sustainable agricultural land management (SALM) practices.

The objective of Vi Agroforestry is to fight and prevent erosion and to enrich degraded soil. Since Carbon Solutions Ltd. has seen that farmers in western Kenya experience the dire effects of climate change first hand every day. This is due to drought and the decline of soil fertility that can be severe or a very serious long term condition. Carbon Solutions Ltd. believes that this will threaten their livelihood.

With project measures such as increasing soil carbon and organic matter through mulching, plant waste management, cover crops, and manure will improve soil water infiltration and holding capacity, as well as nutrient supply and soil biodiversity.
