FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 2, 2009 --Choosing the right option for senior care can be a challenge, especially when the decision must be made quickly. The costs must be considered, along with the senior care needs. As Medicare does not pay for long-term care in a nursing home, more and more seniors are opting for one-on-one caregiving services in the home.
Caregiverlist provides a list of quality standards to follow when hiring a senior home care agency, developed by senior care industry professionals. As there are no national licensing standards for senior home care agencies, seniors and their families may find it difficult to know where to turn when caregiving services are needed.
Caregiverlist's Quality Standards for Senior Home Care Agencies:
1) Business license and necessary state licensure
2) Caregivers are “Employees” (this means the Agency is responsible for paying all employee payroll taxes, as required by law: unemployment insurance tax, social security tax, Medicare tax and state and federal with-holdings)
3) Worker’s Compensation Insurance
4) Professional Liability Insurance
5) Fidelity Bond Insurance (this is sometimes referred to as “theft” insurance)
6) Active Management of the Caregiver through a direct Supervisor or Manager
7) Plan of Care
8) Criminal Background Check performed on all Employees
9) Training for Caregivers
10) 24-Hour On-Call Service
By following these quality standards, the senior and their family will know they are protected if the caregiver is injured on the job, if any personal items were missing and will have back-up care if the caregiver needs a day off. In addition, companies who maintain these insurance coverages will be required to maintain systems for hiring effectively and managing the care effectively which results in higher quality care.
Many states do not require a special business license for non-medical senior home care agencies, and the states that do require a special license through their Department of Health often do not have the resources to regulate the agencies who are licensed. However, senior home care agencies seeking to deliver quality care and to comply with the requirements of long-term care insurance policies, will meet Caregiverlist's quality standards.
Caregiverlist provides unbiased information on senior care costs, care options and specific resources for senior care in each state. Caregiverlist also provides an educational career center for professional senior caregivers which includes training videos, practice nursing aide exams and caregiver learning tools.
