(Free-Press-Release.com) September 14, 2011 --
A new project has begun that intends to expand learning throughout the Caribbean. The creation of a new online distance learning network, that will connect universities and colleges regionally and internationally, has been launched by Lime, the Caribbean subsidiary of Cable & Wireless Communications.
The regional e-learning system, to be called C@ribNET, is the region’s initial education network and it is broadly expected to resemble an academic internet. C@ribnet will join 15 higher education universities and colleges together throughout the Caribbean and it will also connect with similar networks currently operating in the US.
The project is being supported by the European Union who are providing funding for the initiative and hopes are that it will be in place by December, 2011. Following the launch, students will have excellent access to online courses and education resources from home or wherever they study. The network will enable lecturers and researchers to come together and communicate work projects with each other thereby creating online educational groups who will work together to confront local concerns.
David Shaw, Chief Executive of LIME, said: "The reason for C@ribNET is to advance the Caribbean region by generating improved access to education, which will inevitably lead in turn to increased levels of educational accomplishment. This provides an example of LIME using our wide network to deliver a telecoms solution that should significantly promote the region over the years to come."
C@ribNET was commissioned by the Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network (CKLN). LIME has been employed on a $6.5 million 2-year contract by the CKLN to devise and support connectivity for the system and following the launch to guide and provide assistance to technical staff at a Caribbean university who might use the network. The company claims it will ease the use and access of distance learning, online courses and education resources, as well as being easily usable by tutors and researchers.
