Carter Hargrave is known in the martial arts community as the Grandmaster of Kempo Karate. Kempo Karate is a hard hitting style of Karate that Hargrave learned after getting his black belt in Tae Kwon Do. After years of training in Kempo Carter Hargrave authored several martial arts books and then found the new martial arts style of American Combat Kempo or Combat Kempo.

In addition to being a master of Kempo Carter Hargrave is also one in Jeet Kune Do or JKD as its often referred to is a very effective self defense art no matter what your skill level is in the martial arts. Carter Hargrave learned his JKD from an original student at the Bruce Lee school in California. Bruce Lee gave his art the name in 1962 when he became tired during an exhibition match where it took him almost two minutes to beat his opponent. Lee found that his training to that point in the traditional martial arts had failed to give him the advantage that he desired, and that a new fighting approach would be required if he was to shorten the time he fought on the street or in matches of any kind.

Jeet Kune Do, while being started by Lee has not been taught to the general public due to their being so few teachers in America. When Carter Hargrave became certified to teach by his instructor in the early nineties there were less than fifty teachers worldwide who taught the original art, as opposed to the concept version. It is also a little known fact that at one point the original art of Lee was on the verge of complete extinction. Only a handful of teachers were still around and none taught for a living. Most of those who did teach did so out of back rooms or out of their garages, and in parks. The true JKD teachers could only be found by word of mouth, and even then some locations changed weekly.
