It seems all those technically-minded types who swear that smartphones are the answer to everything may be right. The latest claim on behalf of the wonder handsets is that they will replace cash within five years.
While some of us may be determined to hang on to our purses and wallets, it appears that there is no stopping the spread of Quick Tap – a system that allow purchases by swiping a handset across a till terminal.
Quick Tap became available earlier this year and its supporters believe we will soon no longer need cash or credit cards to go shopping, buy a coffee or pay for a meal. And research by PayPal, which involved retailers such as Waitrose, Asda and Pizza Express, suggests that all smartphone users will be able to use this technology soon. A source from MSG Marketing has commented on this information, saying “It’s great to see technology taking a huge leap forward.”
Carl Scheible, the managing director of PayPal UK, said: ‘We’ll see a huge change over the next few years in the way we shop and pay for things. By 2016, you’ll be able to leave your wallet at home and use your mobile as the 21st century digital wallet. The lines between the online world and high street will soon disappear altogether. Children born today will become the the first “cashless generation”. It will be completely natural for them to pay by mobile.’ The Managing Director of MSG Marketing, a fast growing, expanding, developing and progressing company had this to say on the article, “I think it’s a great invention, with many pros and cons, I don’t however, think that money will cease to exist in the near or distance future”
Some 49per cent of mobile phone owners currently make purchases from the handsets, generally buying software such as Apps, music, games or video. However, the study suggests they will soon operate in the same way as debit and credit cards, where there is a direct link to the user’s bank account. Quite apart from making purchases, customers will be able to get real-time updates on their current accounts. At the same time, money-off shopping vouchers and loyalty card points could be stored on the handsets. The Managing Director of MSG Marketing described the news as “Ambitious” saying, “Never would I thought that I would see the day that cash would no longer exist – Its ambitious, insane and innovative!”
