A cash drawer is the most essential part in the POS system. It stores the credit card receipts, money and other paper work of the store or the outlet. It is a hardware that receives signals from the CPU after the transaction is over at the receipt printer. At times even the receipt printer gives out the signal to operate the cash drawer. POS software transforms the desktop to cash register that collects the data of the product sale, product range and price and availability. A cash register also calculates the breakeven point, maintains the balance sheet of the POS system.
A cash drawer can be purchased as a separate device but it has to be fully compatible with the POS software and other hardware devices. Cash drawer has to be strong and sturdy so that it can sustain the constant wear and tear due to constant opening and closing required in the system. It operates on the pre set time duration. The speed of operation has to be in proper tandem with other devices. It should work efficiently and should be cost saving. An easy to install and integrate to with cash drawer is the demand of the market. There are different mechanisms on which it works like docket printer driven, serial interface driven, one with USB interface and has accessories. It can be attached via a serial or parallel port. It can be printer specific too as most of them are printer driven cash drawers.
In a POS system, a receipt printer is used to drive the drawers. The receipt works as a legal document from the shopkeeper to the consumer that defines the purchase of the product. While the receipt is a normal piece of paper, many a time’s labels are also used to keep records. A label printer is an enhanced version of printers used to print self-adhesive labels or cards. They have in-built key board and displays and can be integrated with a system or can be used independently. It also contains rolled stock of self-adhesive paper and self tear sheet. The connection to the label printer can be via intranet, Ethernet, USB, serial interface or can be through wireless systems. The labels are printed on a wide range of materials like label plastic papers, synthetic paper, etc. To print the label two major types of mechanisms are used like laser, impact and thermal printing. The most widely used mechanism is the thermal printing where the ink transfers on the paper permanently and the direct thermal printing involves temporary ink printing which fades away on exposure to UV, sunlight and heat. Materials like wax and resin are used to print on the labels.
With cash drawers and label printers, the retail stores can save much on human staff and enrich their efficiency
