It was a sublime weekend for cat-lovers at the National Capital Cat Show last weekend. This annual show is the largest gathering of cat-lovers in the metro Washington DC area, and one of the largest shows of it’s kind in the U.S. Each year it is held in the spacious Dulles Expo Center. Over the course of two days over 3,200 spectators attended the show. (See photos through link)

Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://www.dcpettalk.com/2011/09/19/cat-show-roars/ Once you had passed through the front doors you were immediately reminded of how spacious the facility really is, and why it is used for so many venues. Susan Cook Henry one of the show’s organizers was instrumental in the planning of this show, which was laid out perfectly into specific areas of activity and interest. Ample space was provided for people to maneuver between competition rings, vendors of cat-related products and services, cat rescue groups, and food areas.
People of all ages were in attendance at the show, from devoted cat breeders and exhibitors, to cat aficionados, to casual observers. The atmosphere was festive with lots of smiles and friendly faces. One couldn’t help but get that same relaxed feeling as one would get at a family gathering, with members milling about or sitting in comfortable chairs talking with one another.
Vendors of all sorts displayed their cat paraphernalia. Cat toys, bedding, cat food, treats, litter, cleaning products… You name it – it was there! There were also several collections of “cat” art for sale – some original paintings and some prints.
Lining several rows in the middle of the Expo Center were individuals involved in showing their cats – aka exhibitors. The arrangement of these rows afforded show attendees to peruse the aisles lined with people and their pedigreed cats. Throughout the day you could see many exhibitors scurrying about, moving to and from the competition rings, while others sat calmly next to their cats many of whom spent their time in carrying cases that resembled plush, little cat condominiums. The exhibitors took the competitions to heart, and were keenly attuned to the slightest detail in their cat’s appearances prior to their debut in the ring. You could see several people grooming the fur on the faces of their cats in preparation for competition. Still others were ready to answer the casual observers questions on specific cat breeds, or have their photos taken with their cats. And in some cases visitors were allowed to hold the show cats.
The ten show rings – those spaces in which cats were being judged – formed a crescent around the back of the Expo Center. Over 300 cats competed in – Championship, Premiership, Kittens and Household classes of competition. Announcements for each series of cat judging could be heard over the loudspeaker. You could also see the seriousness with which each of the judges carefully examined each cat - lifting them up, posing them in various positions, seeing how each cat reacted to various feather toys, and examining their overall composure, look and grooming.
Many types of pure-bred of cats participated in the show including, Scottish Rex, Birman, Tonkinese, Scottish Fold, Exotic, Maine Coon, Spotted Ocicat, Havanna Brown, Abyssinian, Ragdoll, Burmese, Korat, Egyptian Mau, American Bobtail, Japanese Bobtail, Persian, Devon Rex and Russian Blue.
Each year the National Capital Cat Show also invites local shelters, rescue groups, and animal awareness organizations to attend. Those represented at this year’s show included; Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County, Animal Welfare League of Frederick County Maryland, Humane Society of Loudoun County, Cat Rescue of Maryland, Inc., Little Buddies Adoption & Humane Society, The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington, Inc., Friends of Homeless Animals, Fairfax Pets on Wheels, Inc., Animal Allies, Commonwealth Humane Society, Fancy Cats Rescue Team, Friends of Felines, Inc., Siamese Cat Rescue Center, The Paw Pad, Inc., and Life Unlimited of VA.
Next year’s show is scheduled for September 8 – 9, 2012.
