This book is a must read for the thousands of families who agonize day after day in hospital rooms throughout the world not knowing if their loved ones are going to live or die. I do not purport to understand many or even a few of God’s decisions, but I am convinced that He healed Cecil so that he could be a living testimony to the power of an unshakeable faith in an awesome God, of knowing how to pray to a discerning God, and of the unconditional love of family and friends. To that end this book is an act of obedience to God, a book in which God is truly glorified. Thank God for Cecil and his family and friends for sharing their stories on how God used them to send us a message.
I met Dr. Ramona Houston in June 2005 in Chicago, IL. The Rev. Jesse Jackson had invited me to speak at his Rainbow/PUSH National Conference. In my opening remarks I mentioned that I was from Brownwood, TX. Minutes into my speech Ramona called Cecil, her father, to ask if he knew me. Cecil of course remembered the Andrade brothers from Brownwood and stayed on the phone to listen to my speech for awhile.
Dr. Houston introduced herself to me after my speech and told me that she was Cecil’s daughter. Needless to say I was excited to meet her and I immediately began reminiscing about the Houston family, especially her father Cecil and grandfather, Bennie Houston, Sr. I told her that I would be in Atlanta later that summer for a Voting Rights march and rally and that I would like to see her Dad again after so many years. Little did I realize the journey of faith and love that God had in store for me through this re-connection.
That was almost four years ago and it is amazing what has transpired since that day in Chicago when God’s hand re-connected me with Cecil through his daughter Ramona. God wanted me to witness the power of faith, prayer and love, as detailed in this book.
When I left for Atlanta, Ramona called to tell me that Cecil had been taken to the hospital in very serious condition during the family’s reunion. In Atlanta I asked the Rev. Jackson to call Ramona to assure her that he and others would be praying for Cecil. The next day I marched and spoke at the rally along with Congressmen John Lewis and Raul Grijalva, Stevie Wonder, Harry Belafonte and other civil rights leaders. After the rally I took a cab to Piedmont Hospital to visit Cecil.
I have been around many people who were closer to dying than living and eventually died. But when I went to Cecil’s bedside I did not expect to see what I saw. From all outward appearances - his lifeless body, his skin color, and more machines than I knew existed keeping him alive, Cecil had one foot inside the pearly gates and one foot this side of heaven. His future was clearly in God’s hands.
